Some very basic commands for using pacman in everyday life

To update the system

sudo pacman -Syu

Update the database:

sudo pacman -Syy

Installing

To install a package (always run pacman -Syu, before installing):

sudo pacman -S package_name

To install a local package, or from a website:

sudo pacman -U /path/to/the/package

To re-install all packages (those from the repo’s), in case of emergency:

pacman -Qnq | pacman -S -

🚨 Only run in case of emergency!!

Removing Packages

If you want to only remove the package, the following command is sufficient:

sudo pacman -R

To remove the package and those of its dependencies that aren’t needed by any other application, do

sudo pacman -Rs

Finally, to remove the package, avoid orphaned dependencies and erase its global configuration (won't remove the configs inside .config directory), type

sudo pacman -Rns package_name

which in most cases is the proper command to remove software.

Searches/Queries

Info about an installed package:

pacman -Qi package_name

Queries the repo about a package:

pacman -Ss package_name

Queries the repo about a packages, and all that depend on it:

pacman -Sii package_name

Howto

List Installed Packages that are not in the Official Repositories:

If you want a list of the packages you built and installed locally or packages that are no longer in the official repositories:

pacman -Qm

Pacman is completely broken! How do I reinstall it?

In the case that pacman is broken beyond repair, manually download the necessary packages (openssl, libarchive, and pacman) and extract them. The pacman binary will be restored along with its default configuration file. Afterwards, reinstall these packages with pacman to maintain package database integrity. You can use this command to extract them.

sudo tar -xwvpf <i>package_name-version.tar.xz</i> -C / --exclude .PKGINFO --exclude .INSTALL

Learn your first language with concepts, not syntax

Learn the concepts and ideas

When learning your foundational language (like Python), focus on understanding concepts instead of memorizing syntax.

For example:
print()
outputs to the console. Don't memorize the function — remember the concept: "Python has a way to print to the console." When you forget the name, just search "how to print to console in Python."

This method doesn't stop at your first language. When you pick up Java later, it gets easier — you already know any language can print to a console. So you just search "how to print to console in Java." After that, you dive into the internals when you need them.

Syntax, implementations, and internals change between languages. The core ideas stay the same: loops, printing, conditionals.

First post on pyhax about pyhax

Hello World

This is the first post written with pyhax.

What is pyhax?

Pyhax is the tool I use to run this site. It combines the use case of a biolink and a static site generator — two things I like, rolled into one lightweight tool.

It's part biolink and part static site generator:

Like haunt.gg and guns.lol, the home page is a digital self — a bio-link style page: my handle, status, socials, skills, projects, games, and what I'm up to right now.

Like hugo, it turns plain markdown files into a real website. No databases, no frameworks, no Node — markdown in, static HTML out.

What it covers

Three things, all under one roof:

A bio home page — a full-page-scroll profile with socials, skills, projects, and games.

A blog — posts in markdown with search and syntax highlighting.

A wiki — a CherryTree-style hierarchical notes tree for dumping knowledge, how-tos, and references.

Inspiration

haunt.gg and guns.lol — for the bio-link home page style

hugo and zola — for the static site generator concept

Everything runs on a single Python file. Fast, simple, no bloat.

print("hello from pyhax")
